The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) was launched on 1 December 1985, at the height of the struggle against apartheid. As a federation, it brought together many of the unions formed after the wave of strikes at the beginning of 1973 which marked a renewal of trade union activity after a decade-long lull. Congress Of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) This trade union federation was formed on 30 November 1985 after more than four years of negotiations between, among others, the Council of Unions of South Africa (Cusa), the Federation of South African Trade Unions (Fosatu), the Azanian Congress of Trade Unions (Azactu) and the SA Allied Workers' Union (Saawu). But public-sector unions, most of whom pledge allegiance to Cosatu, ignored the call. For example, the biggest labour group in education, the South African Democratic Teachers' Union [Sadtu], distanced itself from the strike. Saftu has 24 affiliated unions, the majority of which have less than 10,000 members. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) affiliated unions, namely the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), the Police Prisons and Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) and the Chemical Energy Print Paper and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) will be jointly hosting the 17th World Trade Union Congress as from Wednesday, 5th October 2016 - until - Friday 07 October 2016 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, KZN COSATU The Congress of South African Trade Unions: 4907 2 NEDLAC Link to the Nedlac Webpage: 2624 3 CCMA The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration: 2165 4 CEPPWAWU Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union: 3013 5 CWU Communication Workers Union: 3116 6 CWUSA Creative Workers Union of South Africa: 3381 7 DENOSA
