The Consumerist notes that Verizon just updated its terms to increase a regulatory fee, which is great news for unhappy customers. The simple answer to this question is, yes, you can leave your Verizon contract at any time. There is sometimes a minimum notice period, around one month or 30 days. The same also applies to phone finance or monthly installments. If your line of service has a contract term and you cancel that line, or if we cancel it for good cause, during that contract term, you'll have to pay an early termination fee. If your contract term results from your purchase of an advanced device, your early termination fee will be $350, which will decline by $10 per month upon completion of months 7–17, $20 per month upon completion of months 18–22, $60 upon completion of month 23 and will be $0 upon completion of the contract term. Best coverage is really subjective based on your location. For example, Verizon is the best in my area, but 20 miles up the road, a local carrier is better. There was a law recently passed that requires Verizon to unlock a phone when it's out of contract. You received a reduced price phone in return for agreeing to 2 years of service. Breaking that agreement will require you to pay the early termination fee to repay back part of the subsidy Verizon had to pay to allow you to get a cheap phone. Verizon will not make an exception to this halfway through your contract. Your best bet is probably trying to get out of your contract with Verizon because of spotty service. Start documenting every dropped call – time, location, etc. Then call customer service every time you have a dropped call and get the customer service rep’s name and employee number if you can.
