MONTHLY FULL REPORT ON MANUFACTURERS’ SHIPMENTS, INVENTORIES AND ORDERS JANUARY 2020 Release Number: CB 20‐32 M3‐2 (20)‐01 March 5, 2020 — The U.S. Census Bureau announces the January full report on manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: MANUFACTURED GOODS – NEW ORDERS New Time Series: Beginning with the release of June 2018 data on July 26, 2018, historical estimates of the Monthly Advance Report on Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders are available on a seasonally adjusted basis as well as a not seasonally adjusted basis in the Search Database. The factory orders report includes four sections: New orders, which indicate whether orders are growing or slowing. Unfilled orders, which indicate a backlog in production. Shipments, which indicate current sales. Inventories, which indicate the strength of current and future production. "Mother of All Inventory Corrections" is the five declining issues are contracting at a larger rate than the 10 growing industries. Generally, a new orders index number above 48.8 is consistent with an increase in manufacturing orders. The new orders index for June equaled 49.2 although down from 51.1 in May. New Orders in China increased to 50.50 Index Points in September from 49.70 Index Points in August of 2019. New Orders in China averaged 53.42 Index Points from 2005 until 2019, reaching an all time high of 65.10 Index Points in April of 2006 and a record low of 32.30 Index Points in November of 2008. New Orders New orders for manufactured durable goods in July, up two consecutive months, increased $5.0 billion or 2.0 percent to $250.2 billion, down from the previously published 2.1 percent increase. This followed a 1.8 percent June increase. The New Orders Index registered 47.3 percent, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the August reading of 47.2 percent. The Production Index registered 47.3 percent, a 2.2-percentage point decrease compared to the August reading of 49.5 percent.
